Freelance Jobs – Understanding Exactly What Freelance Jobs Are
Because of the global economic crisis attention to freelance jobs has started to rise. Those who have lost their jobs are starting to migrate towards the labor black market as well as seek freelance job opportunities. There always has been and there always will be a labor black market. Even before the economic crunch, many people had a second job and can be considered as “moon lighting.” Often all taxes will be paid on the income from the first job; the second job is strictly cash, or mostly cash, and very little, if any, taxes will be paid on that income.
How are freelance jobs defined?
In their most simple form, freelance jobs are work that can be done by anybody with the right training but they do not take up enough time to justify an employer to have a full time worker to do them. Another way of describing these jobs is ’self employment’. That does not sound so glamorous but in reality, it is the same thing.
Many people would have never considered a freelance job (self employed) viable because many people figured this type of work wouldn’t provide stable and steady job security. However, within the past year stable and steady job security is the concept which is no longer considered viable for many people.
Other reasons to avoid the issue were matters relating to self confidence, the problems of locating suitable work and being able to compete against similarly qualified individuals in what was seen as a small market place. These, too, have lost much meaning over the past year.
Freelance jobs are easier to come by nowadays as businesses seek to cut costs while defending their ability to trade competitively. For many businesses, the biggest and most effective cost-cutting they can do are in the payroll. Business owners are asking themselves if they really need to employ a full time gardener or any other type of employee who does not make a direct contribution to the amount of profit the business creates for itself.
We have all heard of the loss of jobs created by large companies out sourcing some of their major functions (telephone call centers especially) to countries where labor is less expensive and available on a non-contract basis but how many of us are aware of the silent revolution that has taken place in the market for freelance jobs?
There are great opportunities available now that were not there even six months ago. Companies still need gardeners, maintenance men, delivery men, advertising copy writers and, even, order packers, security guards, fulfillment operators and a wide range of other staff members, but they don’t need them full time. They can use freelancers to perform these duties on an ‘as required’ basis saving most of the costs associated with their payroll.
When it comes to finding freelance jobs, one avenue to pursue are temporary staff agencies. Often these agencies will look at your previous work experience and test you to find your career strengths. If there are any companies who they are working with that are looking for someone with your skills and abilities they will match you to that employer and arrange for an interview.
Going through an agency is the most direct and easiest way for anyone to land a freelance job. After you get some experience by using an agency to get a freelance job, it is most likely you will then be able to understand how to seek out freelance jobs on your own. This will allow you to cut out the agency as a middleman. Whether you use an agency or find freelance jobs on your own, you will most likely find that it is quite rewarding to work be self employed and work as a freelancer.
